Leon E. Aunkst

U.S. Veteran

    Leon E. Aunkst, 85, a resident of Montgomery, PA, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2013 in the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. Born in Allenwood, PA, on Sunday, October 9, 1927, he was the son of the late Murray and Elta (Toole) Aunkst.
     He was the husband of Jennie (Newcomer) Aunkst with whom he celebrated a 64th wedding anniversary on January 9, 2013.
    Leon enlisted in the Navy in 1945 and honorably served with the Seabees in the Pacific until 1949. He owned and operated Aunkst TV and Appliance for more than 40 years and prior to that was employed by Isaac Decker Furniture.
    An avid outdoorsman, Leon enjoyed hunting and archery and along with Jennie, was involved in competitive archery shooting for many years. He also enjoyed tinkering with his ham radio.
     In addition to his wife and best friend, Jennie, Leon is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Kathy Aunkst, Linden, PA; one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Hai Tsao, Fredericktown, PA; five grandchildren, Tami Derrick; Logan Fisher; Brian Aunkst; Nick Aunkst; Clay Aunkst. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson and his faithful companion, Tip. Leon was preceded in death by three brothers, Wallace Aunkst, Bruce Aunkst and Earl Aunkst.
